Although the panel readily admitted that the state already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, they still felt there was more that could be done to make better progress. The focus was to come up with a plan of action that was backed by academic studies as well as one that was politically feasible.
Imagine, for the sake of the argument, if we did the same thing every time someone abused one of our other rights. Take, for example, our Constitutionally protected right to due process.
What should we do about this grave threat to our liberties? We can start by addressing the inadequate mens rea (guilty mind) requirements in our criminal law. Legislators must work to identify and repeal or amend laws with insufficient mens rea requirements, and ensure that no such laws are passed in the future.
