Spirulina Protects Kidneys, Reverses Toxic Mercury Damage

It’s highly toxic, but used all around us. Mercury can significantly damage the immune and nervous systems, and the kidneys. As Anthony Gucciardi reported last year, while other countries are doing their best to eradicate the use of mercury, the FDA allows it in your food. Thankfully, a study has recently indicated that the deep sea superfood spirulina is a viable treatment for mercury toxicity.

Researchers with the University of Rjasthan, India, say Spirulina fusiformis is able to not only protect the kidneys, but may also be able to reverse the damage done by toxic mercury.

Published in the journal Food Chemistry Toxicology, the study separated albino mice into four groups. The control group received sodium chloride; a second group received 5.0 mg/kg of mercury chloride; a third received mercury chloride with follow-up 800 mg/kg of spirulina; and the fourth was given spirulina before and after being dosed with mercury.

As NaturalNews reports, the scientists evaluated various markers including alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, acid phosphatase (ACP) and malodialdehyde (MDA) levels on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 15th, and 30th days after initial treatment.

“When the kidneys of the mice were taxed with mercury chloride, MDA content and ACP activity were enhanced while LDH and ALP activity decreased,” LJ Devon explains. “These actions prove that significant damage is done to the kidneys when dosed with mercury. The damage also included pathological alterations, as the glomerulus, proximal and distal tubules degenerated inside the kidneys.”

“When spirulina treatments were given, the damage was reversed, as MDA content and ACP activity decreased. Elevation of LDH and ALP activity was also observed during spirulina treatments.
In the pre and post spirulina treatment group, damages to pathological alterations in the kidneys were reduced. The scientists confirmed that Spirulina fusiformis has the power to ‘significantly modify the renal damages against mercuric chloride induced toxicity.’”

In addition to protecting against and reversing damage from mercury, spirulina is also valuable in protecting against and reversing radiation damage. In fact, after the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, a British company reportedly sent over shipments of spirulina to treat the child victims. Children were given 5 grams of spirulina daily over a period of 45 days, and showed urine radioactivity levels decreased by 50% in only 20 days.
